Dora Says

Dora says that I should cry more.
That I should walk the hallways
of my mind and open every door.
That I should look behind all the
curtains and pry the floorboards
loose. That I should empty the dry
ash from the cigarette trays and
chuck out the refuse.

That’s what Dora says.

Dora says that I should let my
ghosts air out, that I should
take a little stroll with them
as they scream and shout.
That I should play host to
every dark thought and sad
note and every doubt.

That’s what Dora says.

Dora says that I’ve been building
up all this mess for too many
months now. That I’ve been hiding
and biding my time and it’s
enough now. There’s too much
world out there for me to sit here,
letting my mind take hold. And
if I want to get somewhere new
I’ve got to let go of all these crumbly
old things that keep me buried
under all the weight
and self-hate.

That’s what Dora says.
