I am thinking of a tree

the tallest one I ever climbed
one that towered above an old two-bed apartment
over on Temple Heights

I think of her broad gnarled arms
the ones that held my young legs steady while I climbed
higher and higher until I suppose I reached heaven, I suppose

And I watched life moving, shifting, breathing
down on the earth I climbed out of
like I was watching my favorite Saturday morning cartoon

I think of the winds in heaven
softly stroking the lines of my smile
the one stretched wide across my chin
as wide as my tree’s arms

I am thinking of a tree
the one that held me as I swayed with the sky
the one that still lives, I hope
somewhere over on Temple Heights
